FILE: A History Lesson

We don't know how long the battle had waged; we only saw the end of it. The Tower in the sky - in every sky, in every part of the world, something so impossible we still don't understand it - the Tower in the sky as it broke apart, cascading with explosions. We called this event "the Fall."

After it fell, we began picking up the pieces. Many didn't know what to do with it, they just wanted a piece of whatever it was. However, the government soon started collecting all the pieces that landed in America; we heard about other governments doing the same, grabbing up any piece of the Tower they could get their hands on.

The EMFs, the Manifestations, the Fears, whatever you want to call them, they had always been here. But in the wake of the Fall, they began to show up more and more. Some of the governments had known about them, like ours, but never told anyone, since there had been no way to fight them. But now there was. They had assembled the pieces into machines, machines they could control. The Tower had fell, but it was still useful to us.

Other governments had the same idea. Russia, China, Japan, and others. Some of their programs didn't last long - they didn't assemble the pieces correctly or they didn't have the right pieces. A sort of arms race grew around grabbing more pieces of the Tower from countries who couldn't make weapons from them. The more pieces we had, the more machines we could make.

You'd think, in the wake of what happened, the countries might come together. And sure, some countries did make alliances. But the world was still split into the same groups with the same grudges.

Only now we have a new enemy. And a new way to fight.
